There aren’t many truly AFK Thieving methods in Old School RuneScape — but the handful that exist are surprisingly strong, and one of them is arguably the most AFK skilling method in the entire game. This guide covers every AFK and low-attention Thieving option, ordered from most AFK to least, with XP rates, GP rates, and exactly how long you can look away.
Quick Summary
- Most AFK: Pickpocketing Wealthy Citizens — one click every ~90 seconds
- Best XP: Ardougne Knights (up to 240k/hr) or Port Roberts stalls at high level
- Best GP: Ardougne Knights with the rogue’s outfit
- Lowest requirement: Port Roberts stalls — thievable from level 2 Thieving
- Best all-round for ironmen: Wealthy Citizens into Stealing Valuables
- Gear that matters most: Full rogue’s outfit (doubles pickpocket loot)

What Counts as AFK Thieving?
Thieving is an active skill by design, so “AFK” here means one of two things: methods where a single click buys you a long stretch of automatic XP, or methods where you can look away from the screen entirely even though your hand is still working. Wealthy Citizens are the first kind. Ardougne Knights are the second — you click constantly, but you never have to watch.
The list below is ordered by how long you can genuinely leave the game alone, not by XP rate.
1. Pickpocketing Wealthy Citizens

Pickpocketing Wealthy Citizens in Varlamore is the most AFK Thieving method in the game — roughly one click every 90 seconds.
Head to the middle of the Bazaar in Civitas illa Fortis. Every 84–99 seconds, one of three street urchins (Leo, Julia, or Aurelia) distracts a wealthy citizen for about 20 seconds. Click the distracted citizen and you will pickpocket them repeatedly with a 100% success rate until the distraction ends, then stop automatically. Each successful pickpocket is 96 Thieving XP.
Requirements
- 50 Thieving
- Children of the Sun (for Varlamore access — no requirements, ~10 minutes)
- Recommended: full rogue’s outfit, Ardougne Diary
Tips
- The full rogue’s outfit doubles your pickpocket loot, including house keys. It is the single biggest upgrade for this method — see our Rogue’s Outfit guide for the fastest way to get it.
- The House Thieving Varlamore RuneLite plugin highlights citizens and alerts you when one is distracted. Without it, watch for the purple chat message.
- If you are away when a distraction starts, you will still auto-pickpocket, just at a much slower rate for about 15 seconds — so a missed alarm is not a total loss.
- At 75 Thieving, bring a gem bag and hit the nearby gem stalls during the downtime between distractions. That pushes you from roughly 65k XP/hr to closer to 100k.
- You will accumulate house keys (about 1 in 17, doubled with the rogue’s outfit) and Easy clue scrolls. The keys feed straight into the next method.
We cover this method and Stealing Valuables in full detail — success rates, loot tables, and the most efficient Bazaar setup — in the Varlamore Thieving Guide.
2. Stealing Valuables

Stealing valuables trades a little AFK time for noticeably better XP, and it runs on the house keys you just collected.
Use a key on one of the three houses — Lavinia’s, Victor’s, or Caius’ — and steal from the wardrobes, chests, and jewellery cases inside. Each item is 45 Thieving XP. Periodically a flashing arrow appears over an object; clicking it within about 7 seconds gives a one-time bonus of 14 valuables and 630 XP, which is where a large chunk of both your XP and your profit comes from.
The homeowner returns 180–190 seconds after leaving. A whistle sound and a chatbox warning give you notice — leave through the window. If they catch you inside, you lose roughly 90% of what you stole from that house (anything already banked from earlier houses is safe).
Sell valuables to Oriana outside the Fortis west bank for 55 gp each, or 65 gp once you hit Gladiator rank at the Fortis Colosseum.
Requirements
- 50 Thieving
- Children of the Sun
- House keys (pickpocketing wealthy citizens, ~1/17 — or fishing at the park spot, ~1/10)
Tips
- Don’t ignore the fishing spot. Keys drop at about 1 in 10 from the park fishing spot versus 1 in 17 from pickpocketing, so if you are key-starved that is the faster refill.
- The flashing arrow is worth 14 stolen items in one click — treat it as the priority action over everything else in the house.
- You will pick up blessed bone statuettes for Prayer XP and jewellery up to diamond quality along the way, which is a meaningful side benefit for ironmen.
- Expect 72k XP/hr at level 50, rising to about 105k at 99.
3. Port Roberts Stalls

Sailing introduced one of the most relaxed high-XP Thieving methods in the game. Port Roberts is a floating platform in the Western Ocean, north-east of Civitas illa Fortis, and its marketplace holds nine thieving stalls.
What makes them special: the stalls do not deplete. You keep stealing from the same stall until you get caught or move away. The trade-off is a 5-tick steal timer instead of the usual 2.
| Stall | Thieving Level |
|---|---|
| Veg | 2 |
| Silk | 20 |
| Fur | 35 |
| Fish | 42 |
| Silver | 50 |
| Spice | 65 |
| Gem | 75 |
| Ore | 82 |
| Cannonball | 87 |
Requirements
- 50 Sailing to dock (or take a charter ship)
- 2 Thieving for the first stall — this scales all the way to 87
Tips
- Learn the 4-2 rotation: a stall can be thieved four times after a guard walks away, then you move to a second stall and thieve it twice while the guard cycles back. That rotation is what unlocks the top rates.
- Getting spotted by a market guard sends you to jail, so the rotation timing matters more than click speed.
- Rates run from around 4k XP/hr at level 2 up to roughly 255k XP/hr at level 87. At level 65 expect roughly 97k–120k XP/hr and about 100k gp/hr.
- This is the best option in the game for low-level Thieving if you already have the Sailing level for it.
4. Sorceress’s Garden (Summer)

Not truly AFK, but genuinely relaxed: the one-click Summer Garden method is roughly two clicks every 30 seconds for some of the best Thieving XP in the game.
The elementals guarding the garden can only see and teleport you when they are within two squares, so once you learn the timing you can walk the same route indefinitely without ever being caught. The RuneLite plugin shows guard paths and timings, which turns this from a concentration exercise into muscle memory.
Requirements
- 65 Thieving (Summer garden)
- Prince Ali Rescue — required to access the minigame and speak to Osman
Tips
- Each glass of summer sq’irkjuice turned in to Osman is 3,000 Thieving XP. Realistic rates land around 140k–150k XP/hr.
- Profit is minimal — treat this as an XP method, not a money maker.
- The lower gardens (Winter at level 1, Spring at 25, Autumn at 45) work the same way at reduced rates if you are not 65 yet.
5. Ardougne Knights

The most popular Thieving method in the game is not AFK at all — so why is it here? Because you can set it up so that you never have to look at the screen, even though you are clicking constantly.
Find a world where someone is permanently splashing a knight at the south Ardougne bank, which keeps the knight stuck in place instead of wandering. Worlds 333, 355, 443 and 445 are the usual candidates. Zoom in on the stationary knight so the click target fills a large part of the screen, and from there it is a single repeated click you can do while watching something else.
Requirements
- 55 Thieving
- Ardougne Medium Diary strongly recommended (Hard and Elite better still)
- Recommended: full rogue’s outfit for double loot
Tips
- Rates scale hard: about 86k XP/hr at level 55, 159k at 80, and up to 240k XP/hr at 95+, where you stop failing entirely with the diary.
- GP is the real draw — with the full rogue’s outfit this is comfortably the best Thieving money in the game, in the range of 150k–300k gp/hr depending on level.
- Bring food early on. Failed pickpockets stun you for a few seconds and chip your health.
- A locked-in cursor position or a foot pedal makes the repetition far more comfortable over long sessions.
A note on input setups: you must make every click yourself. Tools that hold a cursor in place or map clicking to a pedal are just input hardware — but anything that generates clicks for you, including autoclickers and macros, is automation and is bannable under Jagex’s rules. Don’t risk an account over a Thieving grind.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most AFK Thieving method in OSRS?
Pickpocketing Wealthy Citizens in Civitas illa Fortis. An urchin distracts a citizen every 84–99 seconds, and a single click during that window gives you around 20 seconds of guaranteed pickpockets. That works out to roughly one click every 90 seconds, making it the most AFK Thieving method in the game.
What is the best AFK Thieving XP in OSRS?
For genuinely AFK training, Wealthy Citizens gives 65k–100k XP/hr. If you can tolerate active clicking, Ardougne Knights reach 240k XP/hr at level 95+ and Port Roberts stalls reach around 255k at level 87.
Do I need the rogue’s outfit for AFK Thieving?
It isn’t required, but it doubles your pickpocket loot, which roughly doubles your gp per hour on Wealthy Citizens and Ardougne Knights. It needs 50 Agility and 50 Thieving and comes from the Rogues’ Den minigame.
What Thieving level do you need for Wealthy Citizens?
Level 50 Thieving, plus completion of Children of the Sun for access to Varlamore. The quest has no requirements and takes about ten minutes.
Can you AFK Ardougne Knights?
Not in the sense of leaving the game alone — every pickpocket is a click. But on a world where a splasher is holding a knight in place, you can zoom in and click repeatedly without watching the screen. Anything that generates those clicks for you is automation and is bannable.
Is Port Roberts good for low-level Thieving?
Yes, it’s the best low-level option in the game if you have 50 Sailing to get there. The stalls start at level 2 Thieving, don’t deplete, and scale all the way to level 87.
How much is a valuable worth in OSRS?
Oriana outside the Fortis west bank buys valuables for 55 gp each, rising to 65 gp each once you earn Gladiator rank at the Fortis Colosseum, which requires 8,000 glory.
