Varlamore Thieving Guide – Wealthy Citizens & Stealing Valuables - Video Guide

Last Updated: February 19, 2026

Overview

Varlamore added two new ways to gain Thieving experience in Old School RuneScape. Pickpocketing Wealth Citizens is the most AFK Thieving method in the game. Stealing Valuables focuses on stealing high-value loot and gives a little more XP and less AFKness.

Requirements

  • 50 Thieving
  • Children of the Sun (required for access to Varlamore)

Recommendations

  • Rogue Outfit (highly recommended) — doubles your pickpocket loot. (Link to Rogue Outfit Guide)
  • House Thieving Varlamore RuneLite Plugin (helpful, not required)
  • Ardougne Diaries: Medium / Hard / Elite (lets you AFK longer with higher coin pouch capacity)

Quick Summary

  • Wealthy Citizens: Extremely AFK (about 1 click every ~90 seconds). Great starter method and solid profit.
  • Stealing Valuables: Uses House Keys from Wealthy Citizens. Less AFK, but higher XP. There are higher XP thieving methods if you are looking for something less AFK.
  • Best approach: Wealthy Citizens are a perfect AFK Thieving method and good early game money maker, especially for ironmen. Stealing Valuables really isn’t worth doing.

Location

Both of these methods take place in Civitas illa Fortis.

  • Fastest teleport: Civitas illa Fortis teleport (requires completion of Twilight’s Promise).
  • If you don’t have the teleport: Use the Quetzal just east of Varrock east bank.

Strategy

Method 1: Wealthy Citizens (AFK Pickpocketing)

To get started with Wealthy Citizens, head to the middle of the Bazaar. Thieving Wealthy Citizens is one of the most AFK training methods in the game, with roughly one click every ~90 seconds.

How it works

  1. About every 90 seconds, a child (urchin) will distract one of the wealthy citizens in the area.
  2. Click the distracted wealthy citizen to pickpocket them around 15 times without being caught.
  3. Your character automatically stops when the distraction ends. Wait for the next distraction and repeat.

RuneLite plugin (optional)

  • Highlights all wealthy citizens in the area
  • Alerts you when a citizen becomes distracted
  • Highlights the distracted target

Without the plugin, just wait for a purple message in your chatbox.

Important notes

  • Rogue Outfit is highly recommended because it doubles your loot.
  • Coin pouches: With Ardougne diaries completed, you can hold 56 (Medium), 84 (Hard), or 140 (Elite) coin pouches. You must open pouches when full or you won’t be able to pickpocket.
  • Even though this is AFK, you can use downtime to alch or fletch arrows.
  • If you have 75 Thieving+, consider bringing a gem bag and stealing from nearby gem stalls while you wait for distractions to increase XP/hr.

XP and GP

Because you can’t fail pickpocketing a distracted wealthy citizen, everyone gets similar base rates:

  • ~60,000 Thieving XP/hr
  • ~100,000 GP/hr (with Rogue Outfit)

If you add gem stalls, you can reach around ~95,000 Thieving XP/hr plus gems. Wealthy Citizens are also a great source of Easy Clue Scrolls and House Keys (used for Stealing Valuables).

Method 2: Stealing Valuables (Using House Keys)

Stealing Valuables is the second Varlamore Thieving activity. It uses the House Keys you get from Wealthy Citizens and trades some AFK time for more Thieving XP.

How it works

  1. One of the three houses will occasionally be empty. Enter it using a House Key.
  2. If you’re using the RuneLite plugin, a flashing arrow shows which house is available. Otherwise, check which one is empty.
  3. Inside, start thieving from an available spot (like a wardrobe, chest, or jewellery case). You’ll thieve automatically, similar to Wealthy Citizens.
  4. Occasionally, a flashing arrow appears with a chat message — click it quickly for a large bonus of valuables and experience.
  5. After about three minutes, the homeowner returns. When you see the warning message in chat, leave through the nearby window or you’ll lose most of the valuables you stole.

Turning in valuables

Turn in the valuables you steal to Oriana (next to the west bank).

  • 55 GP each
  • 65 GP each if you have the Gladiator rank at the Fortis Colosseum

Extra loot

  • Random jewellery
  • Blessed bone statuette (can be broken down into blessed bone shards used for Prayer XP)

XP and GP

  • ~70,000 to 105,000 Thieving XP/hr (varies by level)
  • Profit varies more based on luck, unless you have the Gladiator rank bonus at the Fortis Colosseum.

FAQ

Which method is better?

Wealthy Citizens is the best AFK Thieving method in the game. It is also a great early game money maker for Ironmen. Stealing Valuables isn’t really worth doing.

Do I need the RuneLite plugin?

No. The House Thieving Varlamore RuneLite plugin is helpful because it highlights distracted citizens and available houses, but both methods can be done perfectly fine without it.

Is the Rogue Outfit worth using here?

Yes. The Rogue Outfit is highly recommended for Wealthy Citizens because it doubles your pickpocket loot, significantly increasing your profit per hour.

Why did my pickpocketing stop?

When pickpocketing Wealthy Citizens, you automatically stop once the distraction ends. You will also stop if you reach your maximum coin pouch limit.

Where do I turn in valuables?

Turn in stolen valuables to Oriana, who is located next to the west bank in Civitas illa Fortis. You will receive 55 GP per valuable, or 65 GP each if you have the Gladiator rank at the Fortis Colosseum.
